The Walkabout, Shepherds Bush

A slender brick campanile is proposed facing Shepherd’s Bush Green. The Green remains an area which has never realised its full potential as an metropolitan centre for Hammersmith and Fulham. The proposals will reinforce this regeneration through a mix of serviced apartments, private residential flats and a ground floor restaurant unit.

The Campanile proposal evolved through an evolution of alternative approaches. It was clear that the single storey existing structure served its context poorly. The scale of neighbouring buildings rises towards the centre of the Green; the Walkabout was a broken tooth in this street facade.

The proposals transform the quality of Rockwood Place, the pedestrian route connecting the Green to Pennard Road and Shepherd’s Bush Market. Rockwood Place today is a bleak and unattractive laneway set between the blank facades of the existing Walkabout building and the adjacent Empire.
