A new atrium, created out of a former light well, is covered by a lightweight fabric roof. The roof has six operable vents for natural ventilation. The atrium serves both to orient movement within the building and to provide a focal gathering space for the school’s community.

Fred Pilbrow led the team at KPF designing the renovation of Old Building, at the heart of the LSE campus. The renovation forms part of a wider goal to transform the school’s working environment so that it is at a level equal to its enviable academic reputation. This is a project of KPF Architecture.
